Meet your representatives

Paul Durkin
Elected

Mel and I are parents of 3 Mt Pleasant Children, Feya (now at high school), Tess year 8 and Max year 6. We have been privileged to live in Mt Pleasant for 17 years, and have enjoyed being part of the School Community for 12 years (so far).

I have been a Trustee at Mt Pleasant School for the last 3 years. It is a positive, collaborative and productive board, and I would be delighted to be elected again, and to serve another term.

I work in the construction industry as a Registered and Licensed Surveyor and company director, and look forward to continuing to support our amazing staff and school.

My wife Sarah and I have 2 daughters in Team Magma, Ava in Room 5 and Bella in Room 3. We have had the pleasure of being part of the Mt Pleasant Community for the past 4 years after returning from 12 years residing in Sydney. Having been born and bred in Christchurch our aim had always been to return home and raise our children in Mt Pleasant.

I am a managing director of a business based in Sydney, which currently has a team of 12 employees working within the construction industry. I run this remotely from my office at home and travel for 2 days a fortnight to carry out meetings and consult on projects in person.

With the next big project in the school’s future being the construction of the new school hall, library and classrooms. I feel that this is the perfect chance to offer my time, ability to think outside the box, level-headed approach to problem solving and experience within the construction industry to assist and work with members of the Board of Trustees in progressing through the up and coming challenges in the school’s future.

We as a family are fortunate to live in the Mt Pleasant Community and love being a part of the school. I welcome this opportunity to support the amazing staff and contribute to our fantastic little school on the hill.

A bit about me. I was brought up in this beautiful area. I attended Canterbury University where I studied law and science, where I was lucky to meet my wife Nicole. We moved away from Christchurch to start our legal careers, but came back 8 years ago for the opportunities in Christchurch post-earthquakes and to start a family. We have two boys, Gabe who is in year 4 at Mt Pleasant, and Harvey who is 4 and will start at Mt Pleasant next year.

What would I bring to the role of trustee? I have been a commercial lawyer for 15 years and developed the skill set to get the heart of complex matters quickly and provide sound advice to clients while involving key stakeholders throughout. Being a lawyer is not only about legal advice, but also being an effective communicator and leader.

Outside of work I am a keen runner, and completed the 2-day individual Coast to Coast earlier this year. I am doing the event again next year but as part of a 3 person team.

I am invested in our community and I believe I bring a unique skill set to the board in terms of helping the School in delivering on the School build and plan for the next 3 years.

My experience I am a current parent board of trustee member and have been on the Mt Pleasant School board for the past 3 years. Being on the board has given me the experience to consider a wide variety of governance matters at Mt Pleasant School, we often having robust discussions and make decisions that are in the best interests of the children at Mt Pleasant while consulting with parents, teachers, the School community and wider community.

We have had some great successes over the last 3 years including the progress of the School build which is about to kick off shortly. This has involved engagements with the Ministry of Education and multiple stakeholders at Mt Pleasant and the community. We have also worked hard on achieving a 4-5 year ERO review, which is an absolutely fantastic result for the School.

Final words I would dearly like to continue my role as a parent representative on the Mt Plesasant School board and to continue contributing to making Mt Pleasant School the best learning environment for the children of our community.

Thank you.
